by Obinna Heche

With the growth of internet and commerce, working at home has become extremely popular, as many have found they have the time and energy to work around other family schedules. However, for a person just beginning a new job working from home, it may pay to read about the experiences others have had before making the decision to put an office in the home.

There are many books on home businesses that can help get started and help you through the process of setting up your home office and how to deal with those who do not understand what you do for a living. One of the first books you should look for are those who help you decide if a home business is right for you. Not everyone will be able to operate a home business and if you are the type that requires someone to remind you of deadlines and are happier when someone gives you a task to complete and lets you do it, then a home business may not be right for you.

It requires self discipline to operate a home business and while you may have all the experience needed to do the job you are starting, you may not have the other knowledge to be successful at running your own business. When you work for someone else, there are people that take care of most aspects of the business. Accounting, to handle bills and income as well as supplies and advertising are all parts of any business and while you may not need to be an expert at those positions, reading a few books on home businesses can help you understand what you need to know to be successful.

Having the right equipment in your office will make the paperwork part of running a home business easier and more convenient and a book on organization may be needed. Take a look around the house and the areas that have been in your control. If there are places that may qualify for disaster relief, you will need some help in organizing and setting priorities.
Before you go online to buy books on home businesses, visit your local library or books store and see what others have to say. Many of the offerings online are e books written by people whose only experience in a home business is writing a book on it and selling it online.

Find books by true entrepreneurs who took time and idea, started a business in their home and became successful. Even those who started small stores and grew them into major chains can be of help in developing the business relations that may be important to running a successful home business. While the markets they catered to may be different, their books on home businesses can be adapted to fit most any business model and can show you some of the obstacles you will likely run into as well as tips on removing them.

2. College Books for the Einstein in You

Search for books on Google in thousands of online bookshops worldwide, browse, compare prices and buy online.
www.booksearch.ws

by Dave Poon

Aside from the humongous tuition fees, room and board, food, transportation allowance and other expenses, another thing that you or your parents need to worry when you go to college are books.

You can never truly experience the feel of being a student pursuing a college degree without getting deep into those college textbooks.

As you go through your first and second year in college, you would have to deal with purchasing books in Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, History, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences, the list goes on and on.

During your third year onwards, you need to get those thicker volumes for your major subjects like Accounting, Architecture, Engineering, Business and Finance, Computer Science, Education or Psychology. There are even more volumes that need to be purchased for those taking up law and medicine.

If you add the cost of your college books to the skyrocketing amount of your tuition fees and other expenses, you might feel as if you will not get over your debt with your student loan, or you will not get to finish your college degree with all the expenses that you would have to shoulder.

The solution is to look for a book of the same title. It can be new or used but one that you can purchase at a cheaper price.

Here are some great ways on how you can minimize your college books expenses:

1. Compare prices.

If you need a book for, say, Psychology, there are thousands of titles and authors to choose from. If your college professor is not particular with the author, there are cheaper books that come at a lower price which deals with exactly the same subject matter.

Try going from one bookstore to another, as they also offer different prices.

Some books have the same title but have different editions. For example, a fifth edition of an Engineering book which has five editions basically have the same content in all the other four lower editions.

If there is not much variation to the content, you can use the older edition, which should come at a cheaper price and it should be as good as the newer version which comes at a premium price.

2. Browse through the different web sites online to find the same book title at a lower price.

There are several web sites who cater to the needs of college students. They do the searching for you and help you look for textbooks, both old and new, which you can purchase at a lesser price.

3. Sell your old books.

If you have already gone through a subject and you do not need a particular book anymore, you can sell it or personally trade it with somebody in exchange of another book that you would need in the future.

4. Get back to the basics. Ask around.

Ask your friends if they have older brothers or sisters who can lend you the books that they used in college. Your neighbors who are now working probably have some textbooks stored somewhere. Ask them if you can buy the books at a discounted price, they might even give it to you for free.

The most important thing is to be resourceful. Your textbooks in will be your guide to help you through your college education and remember that you need to have them no matter what the cost because they are your investments for the future.

3. Why Buying Books Online Is Gaining Even Greater Popularity

Search for books on Google in thousands of online bookshops worldwide, browse, compare prices and buy online.
www.booksearch.ws

by Gregg Hall

Buying books online is great for the reader. The Internet has opened a whole new world for people who can't get to a store because of health issues, distance, or weather. Now you can satisfy your need to read with the click of a mouse. There are many reasons people can't make it to a store to purchase books, for example, they work an odd shift and the stores are closed when they are awake, but the internet is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, and even holidays.

There are many online book sellers that make it easy and convenient. There are some that work in the used book categories. They don't really sell them, they match buyers and sellers. Often times you can buy used books online that cost less than the shipping charge especially if they are a few years old, this is great for college students. College books are outrageously priced and they are only used for a few months. Finding used college books online can save students hundreds of dollars.

When the decision has been made to buy a book it is time to search for it. If you know the author or name of a particular book it can be easier, but if you're not sure what you are looking for and want to browse, there are many online stores that can help. They usually have a side bar with different subject material listed. You can choose a topic or have a search done on a topic of the books they have. Then you will get a listing of books. In the listing is the name of the book, the author, and a small comment about the books content. Some of these stores will even supply the shopper with small excerpts and there is usually a comment section that other reader can use to help with your decision.

After the decision has been made on a particular book, it is time to pay. When paying online it is important to use a secure web page. There are hackers out there looking for your credit card information and will use it if they can. There are other ways to pay too, for example, using an online bank. Pay Pal is an online financial institute that allows you to deposit, withdraw, and spend money in the cyber world.

Usually after you have selected the book and paid for it, there is nothing left to do but wait. You can choose to have a book shipped to you on a faster mail service, but it does cost more. Then after a week or two your new book will arrive.

4. Encourage Your Kids to Buy and Read Books... Here's a Fun and Easy Way to Do It

Search for books on Google in thousands of online bookshops worldwide, browse, compare prices and buy online.
www.booksearch.ws

by Steve Kroening

Some of the best advice I ever received was to read. A dear pastor friend of mine told me, "Those who read, lead. Those who don't, follow." I, of course, wanted to be a leader -- at least in my home, if not at church, work, and in the community. So I began to read. Of course, I found out that buying a bunch of books can be expensive.

As parents, we like to buy books for our kids to read. Not only because it really helps with their mental and spiritual development, but also so they can be leaders. And for the times they will need to be followers, we want them to be equipped to follow truth, not lies.

Fortunately, our kids love to read. But keeping them in books is a lot of work. We borrow from friends, we make regular trips to the library, and we buy a bunch of books. That gets expensive. And we want our kids to learn to buy books. It's an investment that will last their entire lives.

So we found an easy way to encourage it. If you give young kids an allowance, or pay them for certain chores, a lot of times you'll pay them less than a dollar. And older kids will often have left-over change they deposit in a jar. After a while, their piggy banks and jars are overflowing with coins.

The trouble with this is that banks really don't like to see you walk through the door with a huge jar of change. Many are now charging to count it. And most of the change machines you find around town will cost you a portion of your change to count it and convert it to dollars.

We like to teach our kids good money-management skills, and paying for someone else to count our change seems a waste of money. So all those coins create a dilemma. Until now. Coinstar, the company that owns many of those change machines, will now count your change for free, as long as you get the money out as a gift card for certain retailers.

Normally, I'm not a fan of gift cards, but there are times that they work. And this is one of them. It lets you get your change counted for free, and it gives you the opportunity to help your kids spend their money wisely -- and control where they spend it.

Two of the participating retailers are Amazon.com and Borders, so you can direct your kids spending habits toward books and other great reading material. And if you've spent enough on books, Coinstar does have other gift card options available. For a list of them, visit Coinstar's website. (By the way, half the fun for me is putting the money into the machine -- call me a big kid. Your kids will enjoy that part, too.)

5. An Overview Of Parenting Books

Search for books on Google in thousands of online bookshops worldwide, browse, compare prices and buy online.
www.booksearch.ws

by Mike Selvon

The best parenting books are the ones that are written by those with a story to tell about their own experiences. It can be difficult to want to even look at a parenting book featuring authorship by a person that is not even a parent, as his or her advice is typically coming from a place of general ignorance.

As parents, it is common to wonder how a person with no child-raising experience is at all qualified to write parenting books. Instead, most parents want a book written by someone with knowledge of parenting and all of the trials involved in the most harmful and dangerous of life's professions.

Many parenting books tend to take a viewpoint that looks at it as parenting from the inside out. This simple philosophy refers to the notion that authors of these books are reflecting on their own personal experience as a parent and are, therefore, offering parenting advice from someone experienced with parenting from the inside out. As someone who has been down many of the same roads before, parenting advice can typically be well-founded when it comes from an experienced parent.

Of course, not everyone that writes a parenting book needs to undergo systematic training for effective parenting. Often in lieu of systematic training for effective parenting, an author of parenting books may have a degree in pediatrics and may be experienced in child psychology. The author can then approach the prospect of writing parenting books from a position of expertise and not necessarily a position of experience.

In this matter, the advice and words from an author with such expertise would be well-founded, but the matter of whether or not it would be as broadly accepted as the same advice from an author that was an actual parent is another matter altogether.

Various BBC parenting specials, for example, often utilize the advice of several of Britain's highly trained pediatricians in their construction. These BBC parenting specials ask for advice from several of the UK's top experts on parenting and piece together a feature documentary based around that qualified information. The BBC then also asks the advice of parents.

In many of these specials, it is often amusing to examine the differences in advice given from the childless experts in comparison to the seasoned veteran parents. While both pieces of advice are typically genuine and can be considered "right", it seems that the advice from the actual parents in these cases is generally more realistic and based on actual experience as opposed to potential theory.

Parenting books are put together in the same fashion sometimes. Sometimes, a parenting expert will write a book based on the theory that they know of. Other times, a parent may pen a good parenting book.

Both books will contain good selections of advice and both books will be carefully researched, but parents may find that one type of parenting book may be more paramount in terms of their particular needs than another.

Regardless of the point of view, parenting books are often very helpful to parents who have lots of questions. Seeking out good advice can be difficult, but most of the parenting books on the market either contain advice based around specific experience or around specialized training from a proud academic.

Parenting books can be extremely helpful in developing a variety of parenting techniques and can offer new choices and solutions to parents in need of change.

6. 5 Ways To Market Your Unsold Books Stacked In the Garage

Search for books on Google in thousands of online bookshops worldwide, browse, compare prices and buy online.
www.booksearch.ws

by Earma Brown

The honeymoon is over. Your book has been out for over a year now. Book sales have slowed down from your initial Big Push marketing by you and/or your publisher. You realized your dream. You experienced the speaking and book tour.

You may have already setup book signings, press releases, book reviews, distributors and even wholesalers on your own. Yet you still have a lot of unsold books. Don't be discouraged, as with all honeymoons there's always a season of reality-checks to bring us back to earth.

Now is the time to go to the next level. Join the Information Revolution of the new millennium. If you are willing to explore new realms, there's another way to market your book inventory stacked in the garage.

Use the Internet to bring your book sales to a new level. There's a whole new online audience in your field waiting for your insightful book. Therefore, your book marketing plan should include:

1. Creating a direct response website.

A direct response site commonly called a mini-site will serve one purpose. That one purpose will be to sell your book. Therefore, there's no community buttons, forums, articles or page of links. The links that are present will lead only to your order page.

The front or home page contains your sales letter. The sales letter acts as a mini-salesman that's on duty 24/7 to tell anyone interested about your book.

2. Selling your print books online.

You can sell thousands of your print books online. Simply set up an order page with the ability to receive credit cards. According to your business field you may already have a merchant account. If so, your merchant account provider will be happy to create an online account with virtual terminal. No merchant account?

No worries. There are 3rd party payment processors that specialize in handling secure online transactions. Companies like PayPal, 2Checkout and host of others now handle thousands of online transactions daily. Most even have connections to handle shipping charges as well.

3. Developing short ebooks.

If your print book is short enough, you can simply convert your book from word document to PDF (portable document format.) If not, use short excerpts from each chapter to compile your e-chapters.

Develop your e-book with pages from 10-100. Make it the same topic as your book formatted with sections and/or chapters. If your time permits, you might consider adding additional value for your reader.

Write each new ebook chapter to answer a list of problems your audience has. Include several solutions, illustrations, exhibits, checklist and/or worksheets. Compile into an ebook then give it away to your website visitors to promote your longer version print book.

4. Writing short articles.

I am almost sure like me you have the material needed for your articles in your book research files, speeches, life long experiences, your skills, hobbies or career. You might have extra information that wasn't room for in your book. Now is a perfect time to revisit that information.

Begin to examine your life for article ideas related to your book topic. You might be surprised at what you find. Translate any of these into short articles with 400-1200 words. Also, simply use excerpts from your book to convert to short articles. For example, even from my shortest book, I was able to excerpt small pockets of information and develop into short articles.

5. Creating short reports.

Expand your article with stories, examples, illustrations, exhibits and resources. Create a three-twelve page report full of specific information your audience wants.

Put your report or e-course on auto-responder so that you can collect the email address of each person interested. That way, if they don't buy from you after receiving your free useful report, they get other opportunities to buy from you as they receive additional emails from you.

Every one that has sold thousands of books had to start somewhere less than the best seller list. Realize that kind of sales took time to grow. Remember, it depends on how much time you are willing to invest.

Think about how much effort you invested in writing your book then be willing to put at least an equal amount of time into marketing it. Get started now; a whole new internet market awaits your message. Start by selling those books stacked in your garage. Sell more books and prosper!

7. Books For Homeschoolers

Books for Homeschoolers

Nowadays, home schooling is fast becoming the new trend in education. Although homeschooling has been around since the early 20th century, it is not until now that it has increased in popularity, with more and more families choosing to have their children undergo homeschooling.

In the United States, it has been estimated that around 3 million children are enrolled in homeschooling programs.

There are many reasons why parents choose to have their children educated at home. A lot of parents are concerned with their children's safety, especially because of the rapid increase of crime in the school environment.

Concerns about religious values, morality, and dissatisfaction with the school system, are also some of the factors that are involved in making this decision.

Students who are homeschooled are expected to learn a variety of subjects. Students who are studying at home are provided with the materials that they need for their education.

There are a lot of text books that are especially designed to meet the needs of homeschoolers. Those students who are participating in unit studies are given unit study books or guides. This is a method of learning that is centralized on one theme at a time. This will cover all the information that they will need while they are studying a particular subject or theme.

Another way of learning is to make use of prepackaged curriculum. This basically covers the curriculum that is used in public schools. Text books of this kind usually provide instructions that are step by step, so students will not have any problems following the lessons.

A lot of children who are homeschooled also borrow their text books from libraries. This is a very inexpensive way of getting all the information that they'll need.

Students who don't have access to libraries can also use the internet to get their text books. There are a lot of websites on the net that buy and sell new and used books. This is a quick and easy way of getting the books that their curriculum requires.

All they have to do is search through the database and find the books that they are looking for. The best thing about this is that they'll deliver your purchased books straight to your homes.

There are also homeschooling lending libraries that specialize on the types of books homeschooling students need. Typically, these type of libraries require a fee for membership.

Books are a vital part of a student's education. For those students who are being taught at home, homeschooling books become an essential tool that aids them in their quest of learning.

Women are stronger than men, that is a well know fact. They better cope with the everyday stress, hardship and with life in general. Moreover women are the helping hand for men when they need help. What makes a woman so strong and it there times when she also needs help and support?

Of course any woman as any person heeds help, support and a little faith to carry on from time to time. Often she manages to find these in herself, in other times she seeks help from her family and close friends. Many women turn to the Christian books to seek support and advice during hardship.

Many women have given their opinion about the books so you can easily choose the one you need.

If you feel lost and in a dead end street in your life, turn to e Christian purpose of life kind of books. 9. Accounting Books

Accounting Books

by Hans Hasselfors

Accounting is tricky business, and not everyone has the mind for it. In order to get a degree in accounting, you have to spend a great deal of time in college learning the ins and outs of the profession. Like any profession, there are those who just don't cut it. If you have a more creative mind, accounting may not be for you. I once took a few courses, and did some accounting for a small company. I found it was just not for me, and I stuck with writing to make a living.

If you aren't a professional, but need to keep track of your own expenses, you can buy some accounting books and try to teach yourself the basics. The skills needed to take care of your home, and your home business might be something you can handle. Some people choose to buy ledger accounting books to keep track of expenses and income, while others opt for software.

Software has a huge advantage over regular accounting books. If you have a basic understanding of what you are doing, you can learn how to put your information into the program, and it will do most of the work for you. It can also generate reports to let you know how you are doing. You can get reports for expenses, profit, operating costs, and anything else you may need to know. Software such as Peachtree Accounting comes with customer support.

If you really want to do this, you should buy some textbooks first, and get a grip on the basics. Accounting books can be found online as well as in many major bookstores. You can find more complicated books if you wish to learn everything there is about accounting, or you can buy simpler guides that will teach you what you need to know without going into too much detail. This is great if you want to keep an eye on things, but then will hand everything over to an accountant or tax preparer at the end of the year.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on accounting books and programs, you can look at your local library for books. You may also want to look through eBay or your local classified ads for people selling used books and used software. If you still feel lost, call your local college. They may offer simple and basic accounting courses for those with a home or small business.

Books For Children Tips - Where Do You Begin?

By Joshua Poyoh

To instill the love of reading in your children is one of the very first thing parents wanted to do. Once a child begins to read at an early age, the tendency is that he will have the love of reading for the rest of his life.

The child who have the love for read usually do better in school because of the fact that reading any type of book will be easier for them. School textbooks may be dry and not much fun to read, but it will be easier for a child who loves to read to get their assignments completed. The best way to get your child started is to buy some books for children at an early age.

You can start buying some books for children earlier than you might think. To begin with, you can start with picture books that children can handle as young as six months old. Even though they may not even understand what it is about, it will give them a positive association with books. Many of these books for children are soft, have bright, stimulating colors, and can be chewed on safely.

As your children age, the books for children you buy will begin to involve words as well as pictures. One of my daughter's first books was a picture book of other babies. Children are often fascinated with other children their own age. The book had very few words, but it helped her to understand that words tell a story, and the pictures in the books go with the story. When children reach age three or four, you can purchase more complicated books for children. They can have longer storylines, and they should encourage your child to ask questions. Rhyming stories are great, because they engage your child's mind in learning and understanding patterns and sounds.

You can find books for children just about anywhere you buy books. Many bookstores have special sections just for books for children, and they often have extras like a play area, and they may also have story time. You can also find them at the library, and the library will have story time as well. These programs are geared towards getting your children to develop a love of books that will last a lifetime.

It is one of the best things you can develop in them. To begin with, you may start a book sharing program with some of families and friends. Eventually you can start one of these for your community. This will not only encourage people to share or donate books for children to the community, it will also help lower income families give their children the love for reading.

Where Now For Used Booksellers?

by Michael C. Nankivell

The traditional high street bookshop is fast disappearing and so what does the future hold for the professional bookseller? The move towards the Internet has been massive but competition is ferocious and margins have gotten tighter and tighter. Who will survive and in what form?

There will always be a place for bookstores. The Internet cannot provide for the casual browser who loves the smell and feel of that dusty cosy book filled haven from the real world. Rare books, collectors items, first editions you need to see them and haggle with the owner over the price. This used to be the only way to buy a used book, but we all know that book buying has exploded onto Google in the guise of Amazon, Abebooks , Alibris et al. This is definitely the future, at least for the volume trading of cheap, mass produced novels, textbooks, reference books, manuals, literature etc. etc. etc.

Most bookstores survive by adding their inventory to the database of these big book listing services but the trend is relentlessly moving away from the costly main street premises to the relatively cheap shop window of the Internet where the biggest cost is often shipping.

I remember from my school economics that the ‘perfect market' was when everyone knew the price that everyone else was selling for. This theoretical market is now a reality and book comparison sites and book search engines like usedbooksearch.co.uk instantly give the best price and location for any given book criteria. It has gotten so competitive in the used book market that paperback novels are selling for 1 cent and any profit is contained in the shipping charge. Herein lies the future where no dealer can afford to rent a shop, cannot afford the cost of any storage area, cannot even afford to employ staff because the profit margin is so small on every single book, just to make a sale.

The most efficient means of delivering the written word is electronically. But e-books apart from the ‘get rich quick' fraternity does not seem to have gone the same way as say, electronic music where downloading your favourite track is fast becoming the method of preference. Most people would still rather print out a document rather than read it exclusively from the screen which is not easy on the eye for a relaxing dip into that favourite novel. Until the handheld electronic book becomes the next part of the cell phone, i -pod, organiser merger then we are stuck with the good old paperback. This is not as archaic as it might seem as when you order a book you are pretty sure what you will be getting through the post in the next day or two. It is also already fairly compact, lightweight and instantly usable upon delivery.

So, I believe the future will be some form of automated system (website?) that enables books to move directly from the current owner to the customer with only shipping costs in between. Yes, there will always be room for dealers who can buy in bulk or even find a source of free books (they would have to work from home and store the books under the bed), but the principal would be the same. The contract would be between the customer and the individual selling. This is being done already by Ebay with the added excitement of an online auction to determine the price. Unfortunately the book you want to buy may not be up for auction just when you need it for that project at college! Amazon allow individuals to post their books for sale , and in my opinion, this comes closest to the way used books will be sold in the future, but they charge a standing fee and then 15% commission on top and this is still probably subsidised by their other activities. There is plenty of room for competing with this for someone without the overheads that Amazon must be carrying each year. Everyone else is part of the ‘books industry' with each level taking a bit off the top.

So, that is my vision of the future of used book selling. A person to person arrangement without middlemen, just a service provider.

Search Engines: A Growing Force in Books - continued

By Bruce McKinney

So what we can say is that change, long the most distant cousin many times removed in the
books business, is now sitting in the driver’s seat and will be for many years to come. Efficiency,
an absolute stranger in the world of books, daily now beats on the paper thin partitions that
separate the book dealers of the old school from the wild electronic world and daily converts a
few more dealers and a handful of collectors to its enticing potential. The specialized search
engines seem to be on the rise but may yet prove to be a passing fancy as they themselves live in
the shadow of Google that continues to bring remarkable innovation to searching and is quickly
emerging as one of the most valuable companies in history. Google’s ability to directly search
books dealer inventories may yet undermine the appeal of both the aggregated listing sites and
the specialized search engines. Logically the listing sites will develop proprietary features that
may create competitive advantage and insulate them from duplication and competition.

There is a lot at stake but regardless of who prevails the books purchaser is the big winner for an
efficient market will force material to be priced at increasingly visible market rates while
transaction costs decline. We can all be grateful for the innovations the search engines have
brought but, like sharks, to live they must continue to move. We are no where near optimum
performance yet so we’ll see many changes in the future. And of course we all need to
remember: the future is now.

Search Engines: A Growing Force in Books - continued

One wildcard is Google that is messing around in the world of books. They recently created a
search feature we have on this site – try it out on the main home page or, if you are a member,
also on your personal home page. They now index all of AE’s past articles and provide an
instant sort for anyone looking to run keyword searches across our full editorial display going
back to day one. If these folks decide to try to let casual searchers on the net directly search
book seller inventories this might turn the entire present structure on its ear. But for that to
happen thousands of sellers who list on the major listing sites would have to have their
inventories up on their own servers and of course Google would have to want to do it.
Alternatively, if Google searches begin to penetrate sites such as ABE there might be
pandemonium in this as well.

Search Engines: A Growing Force in Books - continued

By Bruce McKinney

The starkest differences are actually in the elapsed time it takes to conduct searches. In an
impatient world, with often slow internet connections, the ability to zoom through searches in a
few seconds is very important. After all, most searches are speculative. What does one thing
cost versus another? Is a book common? How many copies are listed? For this ABE is simply
the outstanding choice. They are the books site on steroids. Among the search engines AddAll is
reasonably quick and offers a variety of listings across the book selling universe. It’s tough to
find a niche for which Bookfinder is the clear winner. Other people are holding the high ground
at the moment. UsedBookSearch finds the most matches but it takes more time.

In the electronic world of books listing sites and search engines the only constant is change so if
Bookfinder chooses to revamp their software they can certainly do it. And it is also possible that
their search engine is achieving other less apparent objectives and so is successful for its
owners.

Search Engines: A Growing Force in Books - continued

By Bruce McKinney

All the search engines are heavily dependent on ABE because they have something like 50% of
all books listings in the world. All the other sites have an unduplicated additional 50%+ divided
into a patchwork quilt of listings. Because many of the businesses and individuals who list do so
on more than one site (some more than 5) the search engines find a great many matches that
are actually duplicates. To test this we evaluated all the results found when searching for “Life
and Confessions of James Gilbert Jenkins: The Murderer of Eighteen Men (searched simply as
“James Gilbert Jenkins”), Napa, 1864. Of the 7 books found Abe had 6. Given that the total
matches of the three search engines was 61, ABE look looks very concise and efficient. It is also
the fastest.

The sites charge different fees and structure their sales in different ways and you can see this
using search engines. Sites such as Alibris, Chapters.Indigo, and BiblioQuest sell the books
themselves and pay the bookseller a percentage but most sites simply list the book, receive a
listing fee and an occasional transaction fee. As well, sometimes the same book from the same
dealer is offered for different prices on different sites. Without looking very hard you will see
that there are price differences. With search engines we are still in the “wild west” stage.

If you are looking for an inexpensive book hundreds of matches may be irrelevant. On the other
hand valuable books are rarely available in large quantities and each search engine does a
similarly effective job when the book is rare. With rare books the principal difference is in the
sites they search, not the completeness of the searches and no one searches every site.

Both AddAll and UsedBookSearch provide 3 fields to do general searches on their primary
screen: Author, Title and Keyword while BookFinder provides the same choices in its advanced
search. Bookfinder also provides a “Classic Search Screen” option in its advance search that is a
single continuous presentation of search results – a better choice than opening many files. In
every case with each search engine, if you find an interesting copy you can go into the listing
site and conduct the same search again to confirm a copy’s relative merit.

Search Engines: A Growing Force in Books - continued

By Bruce McKinney

In UsedBookSearch the results are also reported as files from each site. Each file shows you
total records found, an important piece of information. They don’t merge the results so you have
to search, compare and remember using your own methodology. It isn’t very hard to do this but
it’s another step. AddAll sequences all material it provides into a single list – of potentially
hundreds of books matches – and they let you re-sequence the entire list in price order, by listing site,
by author, title and dealer. It’s extremely good if not as complete as UsedBookSearch when
there is a large volume of results. Bookfinder gives you files – a lot of them, and they aren’t as
easy to use as the other tested search engines. They don’t give you totals and I suspect it’s
because the folders don’t contain as many matches. These search engines are surprisingly
different.

If choosing a books search engine to use you need to know which sites they search, how they search
them and whether they search them completely. Using Bevier in the author field I ran a
preliminary search and obtained 240 matches on UsedBookSearch, 117 matches on AddAll, and
52 on Bookfinder divided into 36 matches and 16 in the “Also See” category. ABE, the largest
used books listing site on the web, had 55 in an identical search. When you then put Bevier into
Abe’s keyword field you find 87 matches, on AddAll 154 and on UsedBookSearch 173. These
results are surprisingly different although the differences are less than they appear because there
are so many duplicate books entries. I then ran three additional identical searches on each search
engine for Washington’s Farewell Address (WFA), Life and Confessions of James Gilbert
Jenkins...(JGJ); and Printers and Printing in New-York by C. R. Hildeburn (PAP). These titles
show up in the 10-20, 15 to 25 and 55 to 1,000 quantity ranges.

Search Engines: A Growing Force in Books - continued

Bookfinder lists the most used-books sites as “partners”: 40. UsedBookSearch of the UK lists 13
sites they search and AddAll lists 16 they search. Bookfinder mentions that it searches 50
million titles, UsedBookSearch 45 million, and AddAll simply describes their coverage as 40
bookstores, 20,000 book dealers and millions of books. They are all substantial but they are not
the same. How they differ is important to understand and let’s start with this. For the three titles
we searched the total number of matches found by UsedBookSearch was 1,002, Bookfinder 89,
and AddAll 335.

In searching the complex inventories of the listing sites each search engine takes a unique
approach. UsedBookSearch makes a serious effort to show you every match available on the
sites they search. It can be slow but if you wait you’ll see a great deal of material. AddAll seems
to be running against a clock. Their searches are quite fast but they accomplish this by limiting
some of the matches if the total material they locate is substantial. For uncommon books this is
rarely the case. Bookfinder creates files of matches rather than a single list, obscuring the fact
that they aren’t providing as many matches as the other search engines.

Search Engines (including Google): A Growing Force in Books

By Bruce McKinney

The term books search engine would seem to be a generic term. To a layman this is a piece of
software that searches your expressed criteria in the more than 25 books listing sites on the web,
aggregates the results and reports them to you in a reasonable time and in a comprehensible
order. In a perfect world this is true. Welcome to the real world. It isn’t quite that easy. Have
you ever wondered why a books search engine does what it does without asking for even a penny from
you? The three search engines on Google we are looking at in this article: Bookfinder, AddAll and
UsedBookSearch are free to use and at the same time make a living by directing would-be
buyers to books listing sites that pay commissions. These commissions are quite small so the process
needs to be fully automated. The buyer searches. The search engine locates specific books on the
various sites they search and links would-be buyers to them. For this they get a few pennies. It’s
a tough business.

Each of these books search engines has a specific group of sites they search. No, they don’t search
exactly the same sites though there are five listings sites they all search. The listing
sites that each search engine searches are listed in columns (continued tomorrow).

24. How to search for books on www.booksearch.ws

How to search for books on www.booksearch.ws

Search tips

Simple worldwide search

Enter a single word (or part word) in any or all of the search boxes.

Click on 'Search' when ready.

If you make a mistake then retype the error or click on 'Reset'.

Try not to use specialist characters like '&' or '*' or '?' which may have unexpected results

Advanced books search

If you want to search for bookshops in a particular country only (e.g. USA or UK), then select from the 'Book Dealers in which country' pull down option. The alternative and default is for bookshops worldwide.

The default for the choice of Book Listing Service is all of them. This will return the maximum 'hits' for the book you are looking for but at the expense of time taken. If you are looking for a very rare book then leave all the listing services flagged.

But remember with over 100 million books to trawl through worldwide it may take a minute or two!

If your book is relatively common and you expect many copies to be found, then choosing one listing service will get the first batch of results much more quickly. Do this by unflagging the ones you don't want (with a click). You can always go back and check the others later.

After the search has been carried out you may get ' -1 ' (minus one) against some of the sites. This indicates that there was a timeout on that site or the site is down for some reason. Selecting that site in isolation should give accurate counts if the problem was just a timeout.

About booksearch.ws

Bringing the stock lists of book stores worldwide to your desktop.

Booksearch.ws is revolutionary in its approach to using the internet on behalf of you the book searcher.

If you have had any experience of internet shopping you will know there is too much out there to find and compare items easily (e.g. over 6,000 bookshops with over 100 million books in stock). The transition to selling on the internet has been phenomenal, but old methods die hard. Companies are still laying out their stall in isolation, hoping you won't discover that the next guy is selling the same product at half the price. We at booksearch.ws are utilizing the incredible information potential of the internet to give you the widest possible selection of books together with background information and the comparative prices.

When you use our site, one of our 'shopbots' (shopping robots) will take your instructions and then visit every internet book site and search for your chosen author and book title. Within seconds all the information will be brought back for your further instructions.

It's like visiting every store in the world that sells books and comparing details and prices before buying, all from your desktop.
